Become a Fitness Leader

Aspire to become a certified fitness leader. The YMCA National Certification Course allows you to become qualified as a fitness professional and help people reach their fitness goals.

The first step is completing Basic Theory, which covers anatomy, physiology and movement mechanics. The YMCA National Certification allows you to pursue the career path that inspires you. We offer options that include Individual Conditioning (weight training), Group Fitness (boot camps, cycle fit, Rep Reebok or choreography-based programs such as aerobics, step, bosu or dance fit) or Better Bones (working with older adults). We provide adult education opportunities that support success for those pursuing a Leadership role within the Fitness Industry. Gain confidence and skills with the support of qualified fitness professionals within our extensive mentorship/apprenticeship program.

YMCA Fitness Leadership Certification Program

Basic Theory

The Basic Theory Course is designed for anyone interested in teaching Group Fitness, Aquatic-Fitness, working with Seniors or Individual Conditioning. This 34-hour course covers: anatomy, physiology, basic nutrition, cardiovascular/respiratory systems, and components of fitness, mechanics of movement, safety and much more. Fee includes text, handouts, in class learning activities and end of the chapter tests. A mark of 80% must be achieved before entering Individual Conditioning or Group Fitness.

Individual Conditioning

The intent of this course is to help fitness leaders develop a better understanding of the principles related to weight training and the conditioning of an individual. The emphasis will be on designing a basic program that includes all components of fitness to develop a well balanced, conditioned individual in a safe, efficient and effective program.

Group Fitness Part I - Fundamentals of Group Fitness

This course helps fitness leaders acquire information related to teaching fitness classes in a group setting regardless of the modality chosen. It is a prerequisite for all candidates pursuing a career in group fitness including: Boot Camps, Cycle Fit, and rYpped.

Apprenticeship Training

The Apprenticeship is offered to those interested in pursuing a leadership role within The Family YMCA of Prince George. It is designed to provide practical experience for new fitness leaders through apprenticeship with experienced fitness leaders. It provides an opportunity to build skills, develop confidence, and practice in a comfortable environment. Participants learn to progressively teach a full class or design a basic training program.
